Resurgam

The bookies bets in Ireland are on a ‘yes’ vote in today’s referendum on the Lisbon treaty. But we will need to wait till tomorrow to find out if they are right. A consequence of a ‘yes’ vote is that we might see the return of a prominent public figure, yes Tony Bliar. He is a hot favourite for the position of president of the EU, and even Frau Merkel might be amenable to his appointment, although she would rather the job went to someone from a country that has embraced the Euro.
A yes vote will cause problems for the Tories, as they have promised a referendum if they get in at the next election.
This is a tense time.
Will Ireland vote yes?
Will Europe want TB as its president?
Will Tony accept?
Will Irish ayes be smiling?
Watch this space…

FAO all Irish folk - voting "yes" will piss off the Tories, the BNP and Sinn Fein.

Do it, and do it now.

Yes, no, yes, and yes. I'm Irish and a socialist, so it pains me to disagree with my Sinn Fein comrades, but Ireland needs Europe - economically and diplomatically. Membership counterbalances a) the utter corruption of an obsolete and selfish political elite and b) the influence of the neighbours.

On Blair - he lied to get Britain into an America war, refused to join the Euro, weakened all the workers' protection that Europe cares about etc. etc. - why on earth would European nations want him as their president?

Ewar - I'm always up for annoying the first two and Sinn Fein are drifting right at an alarming pace (have been since the 70s).

I was discussing Europe with my housemates the other evening and our general feeling was that we do not associate the UK actually being part of Europe. Obviously, we know it is, but that small patch of water that distances us from mainland Europe seems to have a great effect. In fact, I think Europe wouldbe greatful if we kept our beaks out and that includes our politicians
