Happy Birthday to me

It is my birthday again and it is probably the saddest day in the year to have a birthday. I’ve not felt like celebrating since 9/11 but today I’m being dragged out for lunch by my parents and children.

My birthday wish for me is that one day I will write something worth publishing – sadly I’ve had no success so far with short story competitions – but I’m not going to give up.

I wish you all a happy year and may your dreams come true.

A very happy birthday, Sue. I hope you and your family have a really lovely day together.

Unfortunately, bad things happen every day - a few we hear about but the vast majority we don't. Without meaning to seem flippant, I'd like to point something out to you.

For lots of people, 9/11 is a day to remember for the tragic loss of life. But for your parents, for the last how many years, it has been a day to celebrate the beginning of a new life, yours. Birthdays are an opportunity for our friends, children and parents to spoil us, to show us just how loved we are by them. I think 9/11 is as good a day as any to celebrate the life of someone so loved. Enjoy. X

I’ve not seen my birthday in that light since 9/11 – I used to spend the day in tears watching the 9/11 commemorations and feeling so sorry for everybody who lost loved ones. 9/11 seems to be the day that the world became a more frightening and unstable place - but I will try to enjoy my birthday today and thanks for your kind greetings.
