Happy Birthday to Jane Austen

Many of my blog readers are avid Jane Austen fans. Some are even doing their dissertations on her novels.
If I had to choose one book to take to a desert island, it would be Pride and Prejudice. I must confess to hating it when I had to read it at school for O level. Years later I was mesmerized when Colin Firth emerged from the lake at Pemberley and became the quintessential Darcy in his dripping white shirt…swoon.
I read Pride and Prejudice again and became hooked. No matter how many times I read it, I get more out of it. It is the classic chick-lit love story.
I also love Persuasion and Sense and Sensibility ( I think the latter had something to do with Dominic Cooper in the BBC production).

Which is you favourite Austen novel???

I can't say I have a favourite Austen novel, Sue! I'm a bit too masculine.

I will however offer up that my favourite Austin is the Texas Rattlesnake, Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Merry Christmas!

Ignore Ewar, he's a Philistine.
Northanger Abbey, though I love them all. And I'm a man.

I was cold and nervous waiting for my interview until I read this! I don't need to say how much I love Austen *looks pointedly at her 'big red book' (the complete works :D ) If I had to put them in order it would be:

Pride and Prejudice
Persuasion
Sense and Sensibility
Northanger Abbey
Mansfield Park
Emma

Although saying that, they tend to shift depending on my mood really. Got so many adaptations on DVD it's silly.

As an aside Sue, do you think that Richard Armitage would make a good Darcy? I think he would, better than Keely Hawes' husband in the movie *looks at the movie in disgust and hugs her BBC series version*

Good luck with the interview Toffy!
I prefer Richard Armitage in rough, macho roles. I was thoroughly peeved when they killed him off in Robin Hood.

Vole – Northanger Abbey is hilarious, and a chance for JA to get her own back on Maria Edgworth who was rude about her writing, and Horace Walpole’s novels.

Ewar – what can I say? I hate rattlesnakes.

Oh yes: NOT CHICK LIT: Austen was a skilled satirist.
and as to Edgeworth - her family OWNED the Irish village I'm from. The nearest town is Edgeworthstown. But I forgive her because of her great books.
