Comment - Legalizing Prostitution

It seems that legalizing prostitution could be a sensible thing to do. Certainly it would reduce the unhealthy and dangerous aspects of prostitution. An article published in the BBC News Magazine reported that the number of men using prostitutes has doubled in the last ten years. It would be interesting to speculate if the numbers would increase even more if prostitution was legalized, or whether numbers would drop by removing the furtive and illegal elements.

Stalking
I cannot think of a single thing to say in favour of stalking, although it is an innate biologically programmed behavior in the animal kingdom. Paul Mullen, a forensic psychiatrist, defines stalking as ‘a constellation of behaviors in which an individual inflicts upon another repeated unwanted intrusions and communications’.
The excerpt from the Peep Show tried to present stalking as comical. For the victims of stalking however, it is anything but comical. Stalking causes fear and distress for the victims, and can lead to mental health problems. Many stalkers are mentally ill.
This article provides useful practical information for any one who becomes the target of a stalker.

Stalking

Stalking is defined: to pursue or approach game, prey or an enemy. Stalking happens throughout the animal kingdom. This cute little pussy cat is biologically programmed to stalk and kill vulnerable prey. It is a potential weapon of mass destruction. The link below is to an article by Chris Mead highlighting the damage to the bird population caused by feral cats.

The unhealthy side of prostitution

There are currently over 60,000 people in the UK living with HIV. Although the death rate from AIDS has fallen dramatically due to effective treatment, there has dramatic increase in the infection rate in the heterosexual population. Men having sex with men are still reported however to be at greatest risk. Prostitutes, and their clients, need to be mindful of this.

The Dangerous side of prostitution

Towards the end of 2006, a spate of gruesome murders took place in Ipswich. All of the victims were prostitutes. Their bodies were discovered over a ten day period in December 2006. Two of the bodies were laid out in the shape of a crucifix. Forty-nine year old Steve Wright, a fork-lift truck driver, undertook his killing spree whilst his wife was working nights at a call centre .He is in prison for life.

Prostitution

Why do people go to prostitutes?

Prostitution is the act of paying for sex, a form of a business transaction, between two or more individuals. An article in the Guardian by Sebastian Horsley, entitled ‘The brothel creeper’, gives an insight into one man’s motives for using prostitutes. He cites the need for variety and excitement as his main motives. He argues that being in a relationship means ‘you’ve got to talk to them’, and he avoids the emotional aspects of relationships by using prostitutes.

How prevalent is it?

An article in the BBC News Magazine, states that the number of men using prostitutes has doubled in the last decade. There are a number of possible causal factors: the increasing divorce rate, sex tourism, stag holidays, and the availability of commercialized sex through the internet. One of the attractions of sex with prostitutes is sex without commitment, and the chance to be who you want to be with an anonymous sex worker. The article also states that men are now more willing to admit to using prostitutes.
