Hot dog eating championships

Here is another mad thing to do at week ends.
For the past ninety-four years Coney Island has hosted this event. Apparently it all began on July 4th 1916, when four immigrants had a row about which of them was the most patriotic American. They decided to settle this by seeing which of them could eat the most hot dogs in ten minutes. Luckily there was a Nathan’s hot dog stand near by, serving this traditional American delicacy. Mr. Sehgal managed thirteen, and was declared the winner.
The competition has gone from strength to strength, and this year’s champion, Joey Chestnut, managed sixty-eight in ten minutes. Joey, aged twenty-five and weighing in at 218lbs beat his arch rival Takeru (Tsunami) Kobayashi, by two hot dogs. Joey won $20,000 for his Herculean effort, and was allowed to take home the coveted mustard belt.

I suddenly don't feel so bad for eating such a big lunch! Yikes, 68 in ten minutes...how is it even possible to fit that many in?!

Call me a boring old git, but it seems to me that competitive greed is morally wrong and the mark of a decadent society? Perhaps we Irish should have a competitive drinking binge on St. Pat's or on our Independence Day. Oh wait, we already do…

This also reminds me of another incident in (of course America) when a lady died due to drinking an excessive ammount of water in a competition. (The competition was to drink as much water as possible without going to the loo). The prize? A nintendo Wii.
Ironic.

Curneysmells: The poor woman- she could have done with a wii during the competition. On a serious note, water intoxication (dilutional hyponatraemia) is a serious medical condition that can lead to confusion, coma and death. The organizers should have acted respinsibly here.

Vole:Liffey water is so good that it does not need to be promoted by spurious competitons to boost sales.
